Types of Kayaking

Calm-water kayaking:
Kayaking on calm water is the ideal way for beginners to learn the ropes and techniques of kayaking, before venturing out into rougher waters.
Some people never feel the need to leave the calm rivers and lakes, which is fine, as kayaking is all about having fun, enjoying nature and being comfortable with what you are doing.

Being in calm water is a great way for kayakers to practice maneuvers without the worry about tidal forces or waves making things difficult for them.

Whitewater kayaking:
Whitewater kayaking is for the experienced kayaker. It involves paddling in fast moving water, often littered with rocks and other obstructions which can make it dangerous for the inexperienced.

Hot-dogging:
Borrowed from skiers, hot-dogging is the technique of kayakers doing tricks in the water, much like a skier does on a ski jump. Kayakers usually do their stunts in whitewater, making it all the more exciting and challenging!
It is possible for very experiences kayakers to do twists and turns in the air whilst in their kayaks, or to balance their kayak vertically just on the bow of the paddle - something not for the faint hearted!
